US: Man faces weed possession charge after crashing vehicle into cop shop
Police make sure driver is transported to hospital, but notice the whiff of weed while looking through the vehicle.
Insult was added to injury for a North Carolina man this week when he was hurt after accidentally crashing his vehicle into the Bamberg Police Department station and was then charged with cannabis possession.
Police report the incident on Mar. 3 kicked off a probe after occupants of the station, which is located in South Carolina, heard a loud crash. Police Chief James Smoak said he “heard a noise consistent with a traffic accident” and then another noise, according to The Times and Democrat.
Going outside to investigate, officers quickly detected the source of the noise: a 1992 Oldsmobile had crashed through the brick wall on the station’s south side.
Officers saw smoke from fluids and airbag deployment and discovered the driver unresponsive and slumped over into the passenger side, Chief Smoak is quoted as saying.
Deputies with the Bamberg County Sheriff’s Office were called in to retrieve the man from the vehicle and emergency responders then took over patient care, transporting the driver to a nearby hospital.
When investigating the wreckage, however, Chief Smoak said he detected a faint odour of cannabis coming from the driver’s side window, The Times and Democrat reports.
Checking the car for the vehicle’s registration, he saw a cellophane bag on the vehicle floor that contained a green leafy substance that looked and smelled like cannabis. Also on the floor was a package of rolling paper, he reported.
